Facts-come to think of it-are the only things I really do believe in. Eliot’s Confidential Clerk says blandly, “I don’t believe in facts,” I do. You may not have seen a “visitor” take over a Sensitive’s body, and “operate” it the way you might operate a car! But I have, and other researchers have, and when the memories are those of the alleged ghost, and certainly not those of the medium, then you can’t dismiss such things as fantastic! Too much disbelieving is just as unscientific as too much believing. If all this sounds like a medieval text to you, hold your judgment. For a good psychic researcher does know how to rid the medium of unwanted entities. There are dangers involved in this work, but only for the amateur. That’s when the firm orders of the Investigator alone send them out of the medium’s body. Sometimes, these “entities” or visitors in temporary control of the medium’s speech mechanism like their newly found voice so much, they don’t want to leave. An authoritative and positive position is quite essential with both medium and ghost. It’s not a good idea for a ghost hunter to be afraid of anything, because fear attracts undesirables even among the Unseen. Ghosts are people, haunted by unhappy memories, and incapable of escaping by themselves from the vicious net of emotional entanglements. I enjoy a good 'true ghost story', regardless of whether I believe it or not, but this book was just not fun to read.“There is always drama, and sometimes comedy, involved. W.' or 'Miss H.' Many of the stories are no more than a bare collection of icy winds, bodiless footsteps down the hallway, and banging cupboard doors incidents, and then they peter off into 'The disturbing noises finally stopped, and no one ever found out why they happened, and the residents of the house lost interest in talking about it.' End of story.

It doesn't help that Holzer refers to almost all the people involved as 'Mr. One story runs right into another, with very little difference between them. It reads like some case worker's notes that have been bundled up and sent to the publisher. There's almost no continuity - no storytelling. Maybe a ghostwriter (heh! heh! snort! - sorry.) would have helped. The problem with this book is it's just dull. In Ghosts: True Encounters with the World Beyond by Hans Holzer, a 761-page, 3-lb tome the author shares his 50+ years of paranormal research with readers. I'm writing this review about the readability and entertainment value of this book - not about whether the stories are actually true or even believable. Hans Holzer is a best-selling author of works on the subject of ghosts, the afterlife, witchcraft and other paranormal phenomena.
